Intervention >> Training

Your project may introduce new approaches to care as an intervention. These will require training staff in their use.

Useful tips about training from the CSSP experience include:

  • Training should be continuous, rather than one-off, particularly in areas with high staff turnover;
  • Targeted training of senior staff who are the stable staffing component within the work setting can assist in helping to shape the behaviours of new staff or transient staff (e.g. agency nurses) – somewhat like ‘train the trainer’;
  • Flexible timing of training sessions to accommodate the different work rosters increases likelihood that all staff become familiar with the content/technique, e.g. very early sessions for night staff.
You might also consider training clinicians in a particular technique that supports practice improvement, for example:
  • CPI (continuous practice improvement),
  • risk management,
  • root cause analysis,
  • clinical audit.
