Project Design >> Forming multidisciplinary teams

f. Leadership and teamwork

Within the core team, there will be an individual who is the team leader. However, leadership is best seen as a shared responsibility, with individual team members each contributing some aspect to project leadership. Too much reliance on one individual creates risks that others will not fully engage, or that the project collapses if the individual becomes over-committed or departs.

The team leader may be a clinical champion who initiated the project and continues to act as the front for the project in forums. Such champions are, however, often exceedingly busy across multiple activities - indeed it is this high profile that makes them valuable in the champion role. This impacts upon their ability to provide day-to-day leadership within a project. They may be away often and even when present, may have such busy schedules that access becomes difficult. Hence, additional forms of leadership are required to ensure the project achieves its objectives.

"Rather than a single autocratic leader, this project has demonstrated that leadership is a joint responsibility, with different team members interchangeably taking on different components of the leadership role at different times."
